Hundreds of sites to go black on June 4 to protest "war on nature and democracy."
from Sierra Club Canada
Dear Ruth,
The federal government's war on nature and democracy means silence is no longer an option for Canadians. So I'm urging you to join with Sierra Club Canada and the country's leading environmental organizations in a national campaign to force the government to restore the environmental protection and democratic participation. The campaign aims to force the Harper government to retreat and restore the environmental protection and democratic participation it recently gutted.
We're calling the campaign "Black Out Speak Out" (or using the Twitter Hashtag #BlackOutSpeakOut).
On June 4th the websites of Sierra Club Canada, CPAWS, David Suzuki Foundation, Ecojustice, Equiterre, Environmental Defense, Greenpeace, Nature Canada, Pembina, West Coast Environmental Law and WWF Canada will be blacked out to protest disastrous changes to environmental laws included in the federal budget.

I am currently in discussions with many, many other organizations and am happy to report that Black Out Speak Out day (June 4th) looks to be a huge success with hundreds of groups planning to take part. On that day I will be emailing you again to ask that you Take Action by visiting our campaign website. It'll only take a few moments for you to show solidarity with our campaign.
Between now and then we'll keep you informed through Facebook and Twitter. Here is how you can help in the lead-up to the June 4th Black Out Speak Out day:
- Critical to the success of this campaign is involving as many people and organizations as possible. If ever there was a time for tell-a-friend, this is it! Please encourage all the people you know to participate.
- When you see our Black Out Speak Out Facebook updates please don't forget to "Like" and "Share" them.
- For our Twitter followers (our "Tweeps") please Retweet our campaign updates and for the next month include the Hashtag #BlackOutSpeakOut in all your Tweets.
- If you are able, please make a small donation. We need you more than ever.
This is it. The war has begun. The future of the Canadian environment is truly at stake. We need to take a stand now — future generations are depending on us.
I hope you can stand side-by-side with us. It's now or never. Silence is no longer an option.
Sincerely, John Bennett, Executive Director
Sierra Club Canada
