Ontario AG wants private regulator of court transcription.
from the Ontario Public Service Employees Union
OPSEU has started a fight-back campaign against the Ministry of the Attorney General's plans to create a private regulator to control all aspects of court transcription.
According to an OPSEU information flyer, the change to court transcription will result in a loss of quality and continuity, as the courtroom reporter will no longer be preparing the transcript.
The new policy will include membership fees, in an amount the government has not yet announced. Extra fees will be charged to people ordering transcripts, as well.
Court reporters now have access to material such as paper, binders and covers at some courthouses, but will be required to purchase it after the new policy is implemented.
“Creating a private regulator will add millions of dollars to the administration of justice–costs that court reporters and litigants will have to cover. It will not guarantee accurate transcripts in a timely manner. How does this serve our justice system?”
OPSEU says accountability and transparency will be lost with privatization of transcription services.
