The Alberta Federation of Labour is a voluntary association of unions and employee organizations that have banded together to achieve common goals. Since 1912, when unionized miners and tradespeople from southern Alberta first agreed to work together under the umbrella of a labour "central," the Federation has fought hard to improve conditions for working people, their families and their communities.

Public service unions say opinion poll shows Albertans want more spending, not less.

EDMONTON — Labour leaders are standing up for the majority of Albertans who do not want to see public services cut on March 7.

At a joint press conference on Monday, March 4, at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Edmonton, the presidents of the province's six largest public sector unions and associations urged Alison Redford to listen to Albertans, most of whom want their public services protected.

CALGARY — The so-called "bitumen bubble" is actually an opportunity for the province to add value and create jobs, says the Alberta Federation of Labour.  In a new report, the AFL shows that the difference in price between bitumen and crude makes it economically viable to invest in the infrastructure needed to upgrade Alberta’s oil resources here.

Province’s minimum wage again the lowest in Canada.

EDMONTON — Alberta has reclaimed the dubious distinction of having the worst minimum wage in the country.

On Saturday, December 1, the minimum wage in Saskatchewan was increased from $9.50 to $10. This leaves Alberta as the province with the lowest-paid workers in the country. It was a title the province had relinquished for only three short months after Alberta increased its minimum wage in September from $9.40 to $9.75.

Labour Fed names top three issues for working Albertans.

Alberta's labour movement is changing how we do things. We're asking the parties to talk about the issues that are important to us. If parties agree with us on our priorities, we're asking the 145,000 members of the AFL to help elect those new voices to the Legislature.

Forty years of the same government has taught us there are limits to lobbying Conservative MLAs.

We cannot hope to have a government that shares our values when our world view is fundamentally different from the Conservatives. We cannot simply "convince" the PCs of what's important to us. They may tell us what we want to hear at election time. But after election day, the record shows that on the economy, health care, and public services, conservative parties do not share our values.
