Association of Universities and Colleges signs Access Copyright model licence.

TORONTO, April 16, 2012 — Access Copyright and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) announced today that they have negotiated a model licence that will allow universities to reproduce copyright protected materials in both print and digital formats.

"We are pleased to have negotiated this licence with the AUCC," said Maureen Cavan, Executive Director of Access Copyright. "The licence provides easy, legal access to copyright protected works for students, professors and staff, in a simple, fast and cost efficient manner."

Changes at Rogers and CBC will hurt Canadians.

The Canadian Association of Journalists expresses its deep concern over two series of cuts announced Thursday impacting both Rogers Communications Ltd. and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

On March 29, Rogers announced it would be eliminating 300 positions across its entire corporate holdings, which includes Rogers Media. This may include positions in Rogers' publication division as well as its television stations and specialty channels.

Later the same day — as part of the federal budget — the Department of Canadian Heritage confirmed the CBC would face a 10 percent funding cut over the next three years as part of cutbacks within that ministry.

Bar Association's statement used Michael Geist's sentences, without attribution.

The Canadian Bar Association has posted a response to the National Post's coverage of what could be a serious ethical pratfall by that association. A statement on copyright reform that was originally designed to be the work of an independent committee kept secret specifically to avoid the possibility of being lobbied during its work, has been revealed to be clearly influenced by the writings of one of the copyleft's strongest lobbies.

Lawyers examining the statement after it was released found at least 16 instances where the "independent" policy statement mimicked the exact language found on the blog of free culture activist Michael Geist.

A "source guy" and a "info geek" worked together to uncover the story.

"McMaher," the unlikely team of journalists whose hard work uncovered what might become Canada's Watergate, first met in the Parliamentary Press Gallery's Hot Room, a large office space for news agencies from across the country on the third floor of Centre Block.

They worked for different news organizations. Ottawa Citizen reporter Glen McGregor had been covering Parliament since 1998. Stephen Maher came to Ottawa representing the Halifax Chronicle Herald in 2003. For two such competitive colleagues to team up, McGregor says, is "pretty rare" in Canadian journalism.
