Russian punk rockers face long prison terms for political satire.

from Amnesty International

Three young women are being detained by Russian authorities for allegedly performing a protest song in a cathedral as part of a feminist punk group, "Pussy Riot".

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich were arrested in March 2012 and charged with "hooliganism". Russian prosecutors are seeking three years prison for the musicians.

The three women deny any involvement in the protest although even if they took part, the severity of the response of the Russian authorities would not be a justifiable response to the peaceful — if, to many, offensive — expression of their political beliefs.

Tell the Russian authorities to drop all charges and release them! Sign Amnesty's petition at URL below.

Palestinian village at risk to be leveled again.

from Avaaz.org

My name is Nasser Nawajah, I'm 30 years old and a resident of a Palestinian village called Susiya in the occupied West Bank. My home is here in the Hebron hills that Israel calls an "illegal outpost" and they have demolished our town five times since 1985, even poisoning our wells. I'm writing to ask for your help to stopping the next demolition of my village in just days.

Urge Timmy's to put recycling bins in every shop.

According to the Tim Horton's mission statement they strive to be the quality leader in everything they do. Then why isn't the company a leader in recycling? Tim Horton's started to introduce recycling in select locations in 2000. After 12 years, fewer less than 20 percent of their stores offer recycling facilities. This is unacceptable. Competitors like Starbucks are able to provide recycling services. Tim Horton's limited effort shows that it has the capability as well. It is time to change.

How big of an issue is this? Tim Hortons sells about 3 million cups of coffee every day. The vast majority of these coffees are served in the disposable cups. We want Tim Hortons to improve its recycling practices by offering in-store recycling facilities.

We need your help. Together we can Recycle the Rim.

Ask your MP to nominate Bradley Manning for revelatory data.

from Birgitta Jónsdóttir MP (Iceland)

[Editor’s note: Icelandic MP Birgitta Jónsdóttir is circulating a request to legislators and parliamentarians to nominate Private Bradley Manning for the Nobel Peace Prize, for his part in obtaining and releasing the Top Secret files that have been and are being reviewed and released by Wikileaks. Others go one step further, and ask the public to forward Jónsdóttir’s request to their own MPs and MPPs and MLAs, and ask them to write to the Nobel Prize committee with the same request.]

Dear fellow parliamentarians,
Whistleblowers are under siege across our world. The incredible story of Private Bradley Manning's historic deeds of courage — to inform and transform the world with such a simple thing as the truth — inspired us to nominate him for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. Many parliamentarians are not aware of the fact they are on the short list of eligible nominators for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Anti-bacterial additive is known carcinogen.

from Environmental Defence

Triclosan, the active ingredient in most antibacterial products, is a known endocrine disruptor, which can cause thyroid problems and cancer. The Canadian Medical Association has called for it to be banned from consumer products, out of concern that triclosan could contribute to antibiotic resistant bacteria, also known as "superbugs". Triclosan also contaminates the environment, washing down our drains to pollute rivers and lakes.

Hundreds of sites to go black on June 4 to protest "war on nature and democracy."

from Sierra Club Canada

Dear Ruth,

The federal government's war on nature and democracy means silence is no longer an option for Canadians. So I'm urging you to join with Sierra Club Canada and the country's leading environmental organizations in a national campaign to force the government to restore the environmental protection and democratic participation. The campaign aims to force the Harper government to retreat and restore the environmental protection and democratic participation it recently gutted.

We're calling the campaign "Black Out Speak Out" (or using the Twitter Hashtag #BlackOutSpeakOut).
